Degrees and Certifications:
M.A. Foreign Language Acquisition with emphasis in Spanish from Kansas State University. B.A. Psychology from Universidad de los Andes (Colombia, S.A.).
I grew up in Bogotá, Colombia and graduated from Universidad de los Andes with a B.A. in Psychology, but later moved to Kansas and earned a Masters degree from Kansas State University in Language Acquisition with an emphasis in Spanish. I've been in Kansas now for over 20 years (and Salina for 13), and I can't think of a better place to raise a family; my children are Hannah, Katie & John Phillip - My husband is Matthew.
I have been teaching Spanish for 15 years. 11 years as an instructor at K-State (with 2 of those as the coordinator of the Spanish program), and 4 years at Central High School. I chose teaching as my profession because I am passionate about learning and sharing with others. As a result, teaching Spanish and sharing about Hispanic culture(s) with a diverse group of students is truly a joy and an honor for me.
I love the diversity of students at CHS, because it challenges me to be a better teacher in order to meet their needs; I'm always learning from them. I'm very appreciative of the wonderful support I receive from our administrators, staff and many of my colleagues.
My favorate part of teaching is seeing students make connections on a daily basis between English/Spanish language or between American/Hispanic culture. Inevitably students find that they have more things in common with people in the Hispanic world than they initially expected.
I'm proud of all of the students that have chosen to take Spanish, because learning a Foreign language will not only open up professional opportunities for them in an increasingly global society, but it will also open doors and help them grow as people by encouraging them to interact with and understand a diverse group of people.
I encourage parents to find opportunities where they and their children can put Spanish into practice in order to continue with it beyond high school, improve their skills and cultural awareness.
