Salina USD
305 is centered in the heart of the nation, and our commitment to
challenging each student to his/her greatest potential and to
addressing individual needs are at the heart of the school district.
Enrollment
Salina is the eighth largest district in Kansas and has an
enrollment of (08-09) of 7, 310 students in its kindergarten through
grade 12 program.
Employees
The Salina Public Schools employ 750 certified staff members who
hold teaching or administrative certificates. When custodians and
maintenance staff, secretaries, clerks, paraeducators, substitutes,
and food service staff are added, we are one of Salina's largest
employers with approximately 1600 payroll checks written each month.
Nearly 44% of our teachers have earned their master's degrees and
57% have 10 or more years of teaching experience. With few
exceptions, all of our teachers are teaching in their major areas of
certification.
The Salina Public School
System is committed to the vision of "Learning for All,
Whatever it Takes." A creative, caring and highly qualified staff,
guided by the district’s aligned, comprehensive kindergarten through
grade twelve curriculum, insures that students of all ability levels
have the opportunity to achieve and succeed.
Eight elementary schools, two
middle schools, and two high schools are currently in operation. The
school district is the sponsoring agency for the following
educational programs:
• Central Kansas Cooperative in Education: CKCIE is a special education
cooperative of 12 school districts providing special education
support services to public schools.
• Heartland Head Start: This multi-county program serves preschool
students and their parents and partners with other social service
agencies to provide support services for these families.
• Salina Adult Education Center: This program provides adult basic
education, English as a second language support and GED preparation
for people 16 or older and out of school.
Establishing High Expectations
As society and employment needs are changing, so are expectations of
our schools. Salina USD 305 has responded in a variety of ways to
ensure that Salina's schools will be responsive to the needs of the
future. Educators, parents and business people helped define what
Salina students need to know and be able to do for success now and
in the future. Teachers have worked hard to align the curriculum to
match the outcomes we expect of students.
Staff Development
A comprehensive staff development program helps facilitate
continuous improvement. The district has an office of School
Accreditation and Staff Development, as well as a Professional
Development Council made up of teachers and administrators. Teachers
may earn credit toward recertification and movement on the salary
schedule for participation in staff development offerings.
School Improvement
School Improvement plans are tied to the state accreditation process
called Quality Performance Accreditation. Staff development funds
are provided to each school to support their goals.
Community Involvement Involvement of parents and community members is
encouraged through advisory Site Councils, PTAs, PTOs and volunteer
opportunities at every school. Creating The Future, a process of
engaging the community in long-range planning, has involved hundreds
of citizens in establishing priorities and working toward those
goals. Early Childhood, as well as the Recruitment and Retention of
Quality Teachers, were current priorities identified by the
community through this process.
