The William Allen White Award is a Kansas book award given annually to 2 books,
one on the 3rd-5th grade Master List and one on the 6th-8th grade Master List.
It is one of the few awards where children get to vote for who receives the winner medal.  A book selection committee selects books
for the Master lists for originality, clarity, factual accuracy (for non-fiction books), and acceptance by children.
Lists are announced at the beginning of May for the next school year.

RULES FOR VOTING
Students who want to vote on the winner for this school year must read (or have read to them) at least 2 books off the current list (2009-2010).  Voting will take place by April 15 and votes are sent to Emporia State University where they will tally votes state-wide and announce the winner in each list towards the end of April.

To be a member of the WAW club, you must meet the following requirements:

1.  Read or have read to you at least 2 books off the current 09-10 3rd-5th grade Master list.

2.  Read a total of 6 WAW books (2 off the current list and 4 off of any year's lists).

3.  Take the AR test on those books and pass them with at least 70% accuracy.
You then bring the printed record down to the library and we will track your progress on your class WAW sheet.

Those who reach this goal will be invited to the WAW Book Club Celebration that will be held in the library at the end of April and will be official members of the 2009-2010 WAW Book Club!  Their names will be put on a plaque that will be displayed in the library and they will be recognized at the school awards assembly.
As an extra incentive, for those students who really want a challenge, there will be an individual medal given to students who read 12 or more WAW books over the course of the year and pass the AR tests on them (2 off the current list and 10 off current or past lists!)
