Schilling Counselor Named North
Central Region Counselor of the Year Kathleen Schurle, Schilling Elementary School counselor, was recently named the 2006 Kansas Counseling Association North Central Region Counselor of the Year.
She was chosen by her peers for this honor because she typifies the dedication they demonstrate daily in their lives and careers. One of the criteria for selection includes demonstrated depth and innovation in their work as school counselors.
Schurle was commended for her ability to initiate and complete tasks that seem unimaginable to many of her peers. For example, she facilitated an Hispanic night at Schilling Elementary, bringing together resources from social services, business, health care, insurance, and housing, and provided translators to assist in communication and create comfort. This is but one example used in her nomination.
One supporter wrote: “Kathleen amazes us with her caring demeanor and focused work ethic. Kathleen is deeply committed to each and every student…as she serves as a caring and loving role model, not just for students, but for the entire staff.”
Schurle was presented a “Golden Achievement Award” by the Salina USD 305 Board of Education at its May 9 meeting.
Trickle Inducted into Kansas
Teacher Hall of Fame
The Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame is located in Dodge City, and was the first one of its kind in the United States. The Hall of Fame seeks to preserve the rich heritage of the teaching profession in our state by recognizing and honor exceptional career teachers.
Trickle began her teaching career in 1963 at Salina Junior High School. She transferred to Salina High School South in 1970 when that school opened, and retired from there in 2000. She spent her career teaching home economics, and was a leader and innovator at the local and state levels in updating the program and curriculum to its present-day family and consumer science focus.
She has been an active and involved member of NEA, and among her many other honors and distinctions, Trickle was a 1988 USD 305 Teacher of the Year.
Her service to education has not stopped with her retirement from teaching. She was elected to the Salina USD 305 Board of Education in 2001, reelected in 2005, and served as president of the local board during the 04-05 school year. She continues to serve at the state and national levels in leadership roles as a member of the Kansas Association of School Boards, currently serving as vice-president.
