Angie
Rusher is a Language Arts teacher at Salina H.S. South.
Her Advanced English 2 (Sophomores) read "Lord of the Flies"
by William Golding. In the book, a group of people are wrecked
on an Island and must "set up" their new society. Mrs.
Rusher designed an Internet delivered simulation in which her class
lands on Planet
LOF, which is a great deal like Kansas. After hearing
the "Captain's
Message" her classes were an their own to accomplish the tasks
by their own organization according to the rubrics
produced by Mrs. Rusher. They were required to communicate the
results of their Planet LOF community on a class web page.
Presentations of those results were made to guests invited by the
class. The future of this project will include inviting new
communities to be established on Planet LOF from classrooms around the
world by Internet.
Larry Nutter is a Biology and Physical Science
teacher at Salina H.S. South. Today (8/24/00) Larry taught
students to use Inspiration software to map the categories, names,
pictures, and functions of science lab equipment. Pictures
gleaned from the Internet were copied and pasted into student concept
maps which they will be able to use throughout the year.
Students not only learned about science equipment, but also utilized
powerful learning tools by using the technology. The following
links are to internet pages that were built for this lesson:
