Superintendent’s Report

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, announced that Brandon Cheeks and Scott Chrisman were approved on the consent agenda as new principals for Sunset Elementary and Lakewood Middle School, respectively. She reported that she met with representatives from the Credit Union of America at Cottonwood Elementary School as they presented over 300 Yoobi boxes containing student supplies. Superintendent Exline reported that Site Council virtual meetings are underway with Executive Director of Business, Lisa Peters, joining her in discussions about USD 305 schools and budget. She indicated that teachers may begin receiving vaccinations next week, according to communications from the Saline County Health Department and the Salina Family Health Center. Those two organizations, coordinating the vaccinations, shared they are willing to help teachers receive vaccinations outside of their school day. Superintendent Exline reported that the Kansas State Board of Education has been reviewing the document, Navigating Next, which provides guidance from the Kansas State Department of Education and focuses on finishing off this school year strong and identifying adaptive plans and changes needed for school year 2021-2022. She reported on two House Bills of concern:

  • HB 2119 which is a voucher bill that would shift dollars away from public schools and redirect to private schools. Private schools are not required to educate all students who apply to them and they are not required to meet the same standards as are public schools. Public dollars should remain with public education.
  • HB 2039 would require a civics test for graduation. A requirement already exists that students must pass an American Government class before graduation. Additionally, there is already a thread of American Government standards through the curriculum that begins at a young grade.

Executive Session

The board of education recessed into negotiations and personnel.
