You Make A Difference

The You Make A Difference Award is presented to staff members whose exemplary actions support students, colleagues and the mission of Salina Public Schools. Recipients of these awards receive a lapel pin and a handwritten note personally delivered by a board of education member.

 

Austin Carter, Building Operator

Heartland Early Education

Making daily, positive connections with students and staff and sharing his “day-maker” smile at every opportunity are but a couple of the reasons Austin is known as Mr. Awesome at Heartland. His care extends beyond building maintenance responsibilities, influencing the people within the building. Thank you, Austin for making a difference!

Lakewood Middle School

Just retired, Anne always practiced kindness and keeping people her priority. Quick to lend a hand, she connected students and teachers with books, helped with book fairs, made student IDs and facilitated testing in the library. Thank you for making a difference, Anne!

South High School

Flooring Bid

The board of education approved the bid of Ritter Tile Shop, Inc., in the amount of $221,462 to replace selected flooring at Coronado, Cottonwood, Oakdale, Sunset, Lakewood Middle, South Middle and South High School.

 

Heartland Vehicle Bid

The board of education approved the bid for one full size sport utility vehicle from Long McArthur, Inc. in the amount of $53,995.

 

CKCIE Contract with Presence Learning

The board of education approved the contract with Presence Learning for the 2021-2022 school year.

 

2021-2022 Food Program Prices

The board of education approved the 2021-2022 food program prices.

 

Heartland Child Care Partnership Contracts

The board of education approved the 2021-2022 Heartland Child Care Partnership contracts.

 

Mental Health Grant Request

The board of education approved the Mental Health Intervention Team Program grant request for projects that coordinate school-based services with a community mental health center.

 

2021-2022 School Site Councils

The board of education approved the 2021-2022 school site councils’ membership and meeting dates.

 

Salina Area Technical College Lease Agreement

The board of education approved the lease agreement with the Salina Area Technical College for the facility housing the Salina Adult Education Center, 2620 Centennial Road.

 

2021-2022 Support Staff Handbook

The board of education approved the support staff handbook changes for the 2021-2022 school year.

 

2021-2022 Virtual School Handbook

Shanna Rector, executive director of educational programs, presented the 2021-2022 virtual school handbook. This will be brought back to the July 13, 2021 meeting for approval.

 

School Board Reports

  • Mark Bandré, board member, delivered a You Make a Difference award to Heartland Early Education, attended a Meet and Confer meeting, the Smoky Hill Education Service Center’s golf tournament, the Salina Education Foundation (SEF) trustee and executive committee meetings, and both high school graduations.
  • Ann Zimmerman, board member, delivered a You Make A Difference award to Lakewood Middle School, attended both high school graduations and district negotiations meetings.
  • Dana Kossow, board member, attended the Meet and Confer meeting, the Central Kansas Cooperative in Education (CKCIE) Board of Control, the two SEF meetings, both high school graduations and delivered a You Make A Difference award at Central High School.
  • Jim Fletcher, vice president, attended the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting, delivered a You Make a Difference award, attended district negotiations meetings and both high school graduations.
  • Scott Gardner, board member, attended both high school graduations and a Heartland Policy Council meeting.
  • Emma Doherty, board member, attended both high school graduations, the SEF meet and greet for scholarships and delivered a You Make a Difference award at South High.

Superintendent’s Report

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, expressed appreciation and pride for the efforts of staff, students and families as they navigated through this challenging school year. Superintendent Exline thanked the Board for their participation in the high school graduations and their countless hours spent on Board of Education work. She attended the Project SEARCH Celebration of Success and commended Tyler Smith, South High School physical education teacher, for participating in KAKE’s Edu-KAKE-tion lessons. For anyone who may have missed it, she recommended viewing his clip. Superintendent Exline hosted a Belonging training for staff that will support building strong relationships with students and families. She reported summer school is ready to begin on June 15.
