You Make A Difference
The You Make a Difference Award is presented to staff members whose exemplary actions support students, colleagues and the mission of Salina Public Schools. Recipients of these awards receive a lapel pin and a handwritten note personally delivered by a board of education member.
Jody Olson, Special Education Paraprofessional
South High School
Jody goes above and beyond her required duties. She keeps close track of IEPs and follows up with case managers. Her friendliness is apparent and she is great about getting students to work with her in ELO. She comes to class early to make sure she understands the content and monitors students while the teacher is instructing. Thank you, Jody, for doing an exceptional job and making a difference!
Jeremiah Thornton, Student Support Counselor
South High School
Known for his quiet confidence and to be the first to volunteer, Jeremiah goes above and beyond every day. He is considered a master of many things including spreadsheets, IT, credit recovery, truancy, testing, crises and subbing. Every time he is asked to help with any athletic event he steps up. Thank you, Jeremiah, for going the extra mile and making a difference!

Encumbrance Listings
The board of education approved the following encumbrances: (1) De Lage Landen Financial Services, Inc., $29,440.22, CommVault CASP-Extended; (2) Constructive Playthings US Toy Company, Inc., $23,379.36, play equipment, materials, rubber mulch and installation for the Salina Education Center located at 219 S. 3rd Street; (3) CDW-G, $55,894.84, replace servers needed for ISE and file server used for data storage; and (4) Building Controls and Services, Inc., $143,258, parts, labor and licensing to perform district-wide Siemens Desigo CC 4.2 migration.
Approve Architectural Services
The board of education approved the professional services contract for M Squared Architects to provide architectural services for Hageman Education Center and Heusner Elementary School roof replacements in the amount of $22,250.
Course Proposals and Program Updates
The board of education approved the course offerings and program updates in partnership with Salina business and industry, Bethany College and Salina Area Technical College beginning 2022-2023.
Board Team for Negotiations
The board of education appointed Jim Fletcher, board president, and Gabe Grant to the board team for negotiations with NEA-Salina. Members include executive director of human resources/legal services and executive director of business.
Board Team for Meet & Confer
The board of education appointed Ann Zimmerman, board vice president, and Scott Gardner to the board team for the meet and confer process with representatives of the classified staff. Members include executive director of human resources/legal services, executive director of business and manager of human resources.
Health and Dental Insurance Premium Holiday
The board of education approved the health and dental insurance premium holiday for the January 2022 coverage.
Jerry Ivey Park Tennis Courts Agreement
The board of education approved the limited warranty deed for the 3.66 acre tract of land at Jerry Ivey Park.
Architectural Services for South High School Tennis Complex
The board of education approved the professional services contract for Jones Gillam Renz Architects to provide architectural services for the South High School tennis complex in the amount of $54,000.
Speech Therapy
Jeff Hayes, executive director of Central Kansas Cooperative in Education, reported on current speech therapy data for USD 305 and surrounding districts and forecast trends and implications found within that information.
School Board Reports
- Mark Bandré, board member, delivered a You Make a Difference award at South High School, attended a Salina Education Foundation finance committee meeting and the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) Annual Conference.
- Gabe Grant, board member, attended the KASB Annual Conference.
- Dana Kossow, board member, delivered a You Make a Difference award at South High School, attended the KASB Annual Conference and toured the Salina Adult Education Center.
- Ann Zimmerman, vice president, attended the Equity Council meeting, the Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame event, the KASB Annual Conference, and held songwriting workshops in the schools through Salina Arts and Humanities.

Superintendent’s Report
Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, reported that teams of staff from schools are attending a Belonging training this week. She continues to present, with Lisa Peters, executive director of business, at Site Councils where they are collecting input about the use of ESSER funds. Since the Test to Stay/Learn/Play/Participate program began, the first week participation rate was 45 percent and the second week participation rate was 38 percent. Superintendent Exline reported that Lakewood Middle School will be the host site for a vaccination clinic for youth 5-11 years old on November 17 and December 8. The Saline County Vaccination Collaboration (Saline County Health Department, Salina Family Healthcare Center and Salina Regional Health Center) is running this event. Superintendent Exline reported that Happy Bear, through the Child Advocacy and Parenting Services (CAPS), is back in classrooms this year. She also reported that South High School instructor, Kiley Meyer, took her teaching pathway students to an Educators Rising regional conference for aspiring educators. Superintendent Exline shared that orchestra class at both high schools enjoyed visits from Clinician and Composer Soon Hee Newbold.

The board of education recessed into executive session to discuss attorney/client and personnel.

The board of education received a report from the Central Kansas Cooperative in Education regarding options for special education in Kansas.
