Superintendent’s Report

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, reported that the September 20 student count indicated that the number of students qualifying for free lunch is higher than last year by 16.7 percent. Fifty-one point eight percent of our students qualify for free lunch this year and 1,797 of them qualified through Medicaid. She reported that Career and Technical Education enrollment has increased 19 percent over last year. Superintendent Exline noted that because of weightings differences, we may need to republish the budget. She reviewed recent SPS Chat meetings including one with SHS students where they expressed, among other things, appreciation for the opportunities in our high schools. Superintendent Exline reported that discussion at the Heusner SPS Chat focused on how schools that engage in social-emotional learning see a decrease in behavior incidents and an increase in academic achievement.
