Cole Dow, Central High School’s welding instructor, and Lindsey Chavez, Sunset’s fourth grade teacher, have been selected as USD 305’s Horizon Teachers. The Kansas Horizon Award program recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in elementary and secondary classrooms across the state. First-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding are eligible.
Now in their second year of teaching, their many talents make them excellent candidates. Central’s Cole Dow transitioned from teaching welding in the military for 25 years to teaching high school students. Over the past year the welding program has grown and Cole is developing strong relationships with both students and community partners. Sunset’s Lindsey Chavez is goal-oriented while taking time to celebrate milestones. She maintains a sense of humor and makes time to talk with students individually.
Next steps for Cole and Lindsey include completing applications that will be reviewed at the state level, along with other districts’ candidates, for a final selection of Kansas Horizon Teachers. Congratulations to Cole Dow and Lindsey Chavez!
