Honoring a Pillar of the Community
Jim LoVullo, an educator and coach who inspired students throughout his career, was honored at a Central High School tennis court dedication ceremony. His career included teaching ELA, P.E., serving as athletic director at Lakewood Middle School and coaching six sports at several schools.
Originally from Buffalo New York, Jim came west to play football for Kansas Wesleyan University and today was honored as a Salina tennis legend. Mike Goll, colleague and friend of Jim, shared fond memories that included "LoVullo time" where the expectation was that athletes arrive before a designated practice time - at least 10 minutes early. Athletes respected Coach LoVullo, "He treated everyone like the MVP of the team," explained Goll. "He was always honest and straightforward with every kid that played for him." Before every state tournament, Jim would write a personal note to every single player and hand them out as they piled into the van.
Nine 5A state titles were claimed by his teams. He was twice recognized as Kansas Coaches Association Girls Tennis Coach of the Year, Midwest Section Coach of the Year and KCA's Boys Tennis Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Kansas Wesleyan Hall of Fame and the Salina Central Hall of Fame.
Jim's legacy lives on through the countless individuals who were fortunate to work and learn with him. He will always be remembered as a true pillar of our community.
