District-Wide Campaign Highlights the Power of Daily Attendance

This school year, Salina Public Schools (SPS) launched a district-wide attendance awareness campaign, “Greatness Grows When You’re Here.”

The goal is simple yet powerful. It reinforces the critical connection between daily school attendance and student success while rallying the SPS community to help every student reach their full potential.

Throughout our schools, educators, counselors, social workers and staff are partnering with families to build strong attendance habits that form the foundation for lifelong learning.

Missing just two days of school per month, whether the absences are excused, unexcused or due to suspension, can result in a student being considered chronically absent. Research shows that chronic absence, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, can cause students to fall behind academically and feel disconnected from their learning environment.

“We want families to know we’re here to support them,” said Jody Craddock-Iselin, director of support services for Salina Public Schools. “Strong attendance habits start early and make a huge difference not just in academics but also in social and emotional development. Greatness really does grow when students are in school consistently.”

Families can support their child’s attendance by setting consistent daily routines, scheduling appointments outside of school hours when possible and avoiding vacations or trips when school is in session. If a student must be absent, families are encouraged to communicate with the school and work with teachers and staff to stay on track.

In addition, school counselors and social workers are available to assist families facing challenges related to attendance. Whether it’s transportation, health or other barriers, these staff members are committed to helping students overcome obstacles and succeed.
“Attendance is not just about showing up. It’s about staying connected, being engaged and building a future,” said Jody Craddock-Iselin, director of support services for SPS. “We want every student to know that they are valued and that their presence matters every single day.”

By working together, families, the community and SPS are helping ensure that all students have the opportunity to grow, achieve and succeed.

Because at SPS, greatness truly grows when you’re here!
