Salina USD 305 is the second largest employer in Salina and a key component of the community's economic vitality. The community sits in the center of Kansas at the interchange of interstates I35 and I70. This positions the city of 50,000 as a regional hub for business, medical services and cultural activities.

Aggressive economic development initiatives continue to bring business and industry to the area. Several large industries are well established in the community, and include Exide Technologies, the world's largest car battery manufacturing plant; Schwans' Food Management, the frozen food giant (and manufacturer of Tony's Pizza); and Raytheon Aircraft.

Numerous health care services and clinics, in addition to the Salina Regional Health Center, support the health care needs of Saline County residents as well as all of north-central Kansas.

Post-secondary opportunities include Salina Area Technical College, Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus, Kansas Wesleyan University and The Land Institute. A number of state and private universities are within commuting distance.

The arts and humanities are highly visible in this community, and various agencies provide extensive cultural experiences in our schools to supplement arts education programs. The city has been identified as one of "The 100 Best Small Art Towns in America." Among the jewels in the community's treasured resources are The Salina Arts Center and Arts Center Cinema, the Salina Arts and Humanities Commission, the Salina Community Theatre, the Smoky Hill Museum and the Salina Symphony, and the Stiefel Theatre, an Art Deco-era performing arts venue.

A variety of leisure activities can be found in the community. The Rolling Hills Zoo, located six miles west of Salina in beautiful rolling prairie, is home to 80 species of animals housed in spacious, naturalistic habitat settings. the Tony's Pizza Event Center serves as the venue for meetings, concerts and sporting events throughout the year. Annual community events include the four-day Smoky Hill River Festival which takes place in June and brings entertainment, fine arts, crafts and food at Oakdale Park in the heart of the city.
